We use this in our home office. Print quality is good, no jam issues. It replaced a print-only device so both of us could scan documents (we scan everything and discard the paper). The network scanning feature is excellent, allowing anyone in the office to scan over the network. Others mentioned issues with envelopes, but I've never had a single problem. This is a very quiet machine, and unlike many other laser printers, doesn't stink up the room.
The machine is quiet and the print quality is clean and clear. We have had trouble with this wrinkling the envelopes. PROS: The printer and scanner work very fast. Our office uses this printer/scanner for office work. Another issue is the scan quality, which is not very clear. It is a front feed but, instead of shooting the envelopes out the back of the printer, they coil back over and come back out the front.
We use this printer to print addresses and stamps on legal envelopes.
The fax quality is as good as any, on the receiving end.
The machine is bulky enough that it isn't worth the trouble.
As a small office, it works well for us.
The manual tells how to change a setting on the feed to avoid this problem, but this involves turning the printer all the way around and flipping two small levers.
Don't know how it is for faxes we send.
CONS: The printer was not terribly expensive, but the replacement drum is $200, which is a hefty amount.
We've resorted to printing our envelopes on another machine.
Overall, it is a good, high quality machine with a few kinks.
I will buy another one just like this one and keep it in it's box until mine quits. Then shortly after that I get a new error code that says replace fuser. I purchased this machine after going thru 3.yes 3 HP multi function units and have never been happier. I usually buy the high yeild toner which runs me about $[.].
I had an error code to replace the paper feeder tray which I did at $[.].no big deal. I have a home based company where I print & scan mostly. I print and scan probablly at least 1000 pages per day so this unit has really stood up to my abuse. Oh, one more thing, I occasionally use it to scan color photos and the scanner works great for that. Well the fuser is expensive.about $[.].
I must say I wish the toner was cheaper. The pics look great. I dont print with evelopes so I dont know how that works but I have had this machine since March of 2006 and have had no problems until now. per month. bucks.
So it is in my best interest to just get a new machine. Great machine for the money and I would recommend it. Probably not what you would use if you scanned pics for a living but for the occasional email or online post, it's great.
The toner leaks like crazy. It creases envelopes.2. It had been a great printer, so I wanted to replace it. So these problems are not crippling, but they are irritating.
It appears very similar to the MFC-9700, but in practice, there are some problems.1. I bought this when my trusty Brother MFC-9700 died. I've cleaned it many times but it still spills toner onto my documents.I run a small business and have another printer which I use for final documents. I can't load more than about 20 sheets of paper at a time. The paper tray doesn't hold very much.
I use the MFC-8460N for regular printing, some letters, and drafts, and as my fax machine. I plan to take this model home and replace it with a higher quality, non-brother printer. However, because it was urgent to replace it, I went to an office supply store and bought what they had - this model. Definately not the quality of the MFC-9700.On the plus side, this model hardly ever jams.______________________________________________________________UPDATE: I'm updating after six months. I'm constantly having to refill it.
3. The machine now jams frequently. Disappointing, because my previous experience with Brother was much better.
Work in a CPA office and use this printer everyday. Has 96,000 copies on it and no problems. Word of caution, at 100,000 copies, the machine needs a new fuser and laser which is almost the same cost of the machine new.I would buy another one again.
